25 essential road trips from Tampa everyone should do at least once

Here are a few road trip-worthy destinations, many of which are less than a couple hours away from Tampa. So, fill up the tank, grab some Cheetos, and press play on that playlist, it's road trippin' time.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
Estimated time: 2 hours    
You really can't get a feel for how massive a Saturn V rocket is until you take a stroll under one suspended just a few feet above your head, and this is the only place in the world to do that. Take guided tours of launch areas, see historic rockets, ride the Shuttle Launch Experience and see the Astronaut Hall of Fame at the Kennedy Space Center in Brevard County.

It may be the most outright touristy thing on this list — it’s not only on the beach, it’s on a beach regularly called the best in the nation — but that doesn’t mean locals can’t have some fun in the sun at Pier 60. The 1,080-foot pier is a major attraction for anglers, while performers and artisans of all stripes teem the surrounding area 364 days a year for a couple of hours before and after the sun goes down.

Architect Santiago Calatrava designed this lacy behemoth of a building. The Innovation, Science, and Technology (IST) is surrounded by 84 arched pergolas and 94 operable louvers. It is the only Calatrava design in the Southeastern US, and it's great place to Instagram. There’s no way you'll miss it’s stunning architecture heading to Orlando on I-4.

Keel and Curley Winery

A winery, a brewery, a farm, a beautiful event space, and restaurants––Keel and Curley Winery has it all. In 2003 Central Florida blueberry farmer Joe Keel wanted to find something to do with his end-of-crop blueberries, and the winery was born. Now, it’s a must-visit location, only a short drive from Tampa.

Whimzeyland is a weird little house in Safety Harbour that is partially built with bowling balls, that's right- a colorful, extravagant bowling ball house. It’s taken over two decades to create this D.I.Y psychedelic wonderland, and it’s definitely worth the short drive.
