In the 1970s, Miami architect Peter Vander Klout designed a small handful of round, concrete, futuristic homes designed to withstand the winds of a Category 5 hurricane.
Several of these unique domiciles were built in South Florida and the Keys, and over the years these saucer-shaped homes inspired quite a few urban legends revolving around everything from mob bosses to nudist colonies, and pretty much always garnered nicknames like "The UFO House," or "The Flying Saucer House."
Now, one of the last remaining "UFO Homes" is for sale.
Located at 59 Coral Dr., in Key Largo, the two-story home comes with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It also sits on two lots, and has its own dock and concrete boat slip.
Obviously, the house is a fixer-upper, but the main allure is owning a piece of Florida lore. According to the book “Lost Miami: Stories and Secrets behind Magic City Ruins,” Vander Klout's homes were rooted in a vision of sustainability and ideas of what the world would look like in the future. But unfortunately, only a few of these saucer-shaped homes remain. According to reports, there's currently one in Davie, and another in the Plantation area. Two of Vander Klout's other homes in Islamorada and in Homestead were both recently demolished.
The current asking price is $899,000, and the listing agent is Lisa Frins of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Freewheeler Realty.
