Tampa Black Lives Matter protesters gather near USF to honor Jacob Blake, and call for police reform

School’s back in session, and over the weekend, young folks—some flanked by Navy vets—organized around the University of South Florida for two weekend demonstrations.

One on Friday—organized by Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Tampa Bay Community Action Committee—happened at the corner of 56th Street and Fowler Avenue and focused on calls for community controlled police.

Another on Saturday found organizers rallying a group for a 1.5-mile march down Bruce B. Downs from the University of South Florida to Tampa Police Department Precinct 2 where protesters took a knee and lit seven candles in the name of Jacob Blake, who was shot in the back seven times by law enforcement in Kenosha, Wisconsin.—Ray Roa
