The Hanlon House, a massive Moroccan-inspired estate with plenty of history, is now on the market on Davis Islands.
Located at 131 W Davis Blvd, the home is an absolute beast, and makes up a total of 14,000 square feet, which includes a main house, a pool house, and a two-bedroom guest house. The sprawling estate also features a dedicated meditation tower, a giant pool and a grand total of six-bedrooms, and nine-bathrooms.
The home's early years are a little tough to nail down. But according to Tampa Bay History Center Director Rodney Kite-Powell, the estate was built around 1926 by R. W. Wishart, who was more than likely building spec houses for himself or for D.P. Davis Properties.
Kite-Powell says another article from November 1928, states that New York architect Edward James Mathews was building a home for T. J. Hanlon, manager of Tampa Electric Co., at the same address, as well as on two adjacent lots. "This makes sense because the Hanlon house is actually two homes that were combined - likely in 1928/1929," adds Kite-Powell.
Hanlon didn't live there for long. A couple years later, the home was sold to the Polks, an Indiana citrus family who kept the property from the late 1930s through the 1960s, says Kite-Powell.
According to property records, the home changed hands a few times over the years, and was owned by Port Tampa Bay chairman Steve Swindal and his then wife Jennifer Steinbrenner (yes, that Steinbrenner) from 1998 to 2010.
The home's current owner, marketing specialist Michael P. Martin, has arguably done the most for the property. “The house had belonged to Yankees’ owner George Steinbrenner for many years,” said Martin in an article featured in Florida Design. “By the time it came up for sale, though, it needed over 100 windows replaced and was in a general state of disrepair.”
According to Florida Design, Martin hired Clearwater builder Steve Ware and interior designer Sean Rush to give the place a complete facelift.
“There were many trips to Fez (Morocco), to Rabat … wherever I could obtain the most authentic and highest-quality pieces,” said Rush to the publication. “The search for beautiful tiles and woods wasn’t always easy, but it was adventurous. Crawling through tiny spaces into underground storage rooms often brought the most amazing finds.”
Well, as you can see in the photos, the house is certainly ready for the market, and is currently asking $5,250,000.
